Advancing the Conversation on Performance & the ROI of Compliance: ECVC 2018

If there was ever a year that tested the mettle of corporate ethics and compliance, it was 2018. From the Weinstein company to Uber, employees aren’t just speaking up about workplace issues, they are speaking out. Employers are more focused on adherence to policies and the reputational and financial consequences of casual enforcement. Ethics and compliance has never had as much focus as it has now, and many of you are recognizing that the spotlight has found you and duty is calling.

This movement is pulling back the corporate curtains that have hidden loathsome behavior and is driving a call for accountability at the highest levels.

In late 2017, we were introduced to the powerful and pervasive #MeToo movement. It was a long time coming yet unexpected all the same. With roots in sexual harassment, the movement has ignited a disruptive social response that highlights a brewing distrust in institutions and the people who run them. To speak candidly, I welcome it. This movement is pulling back the corporate curtains that have hidden loathsome behavior and is driving a call for accountability at the highest levels.

Platitudes about ethics and integrity are no longer adequate to satisfy employees, customers or regulators. Unwavering demonstration is required. Our commitments to ethics need to be powerful enough to alter behavior, direct a workforce and extend to our ever-expanding network of suppliers, agents and partners. Just as law abidance is bigger than the legal department, compliance must be bigger than one department. Our organizations must embrace a culture of respect and reject behaviors that have gone unaddressed or excused for too long. It is time for Corporate Compliance to lead the way.

The Messy Intersection of Politics, Ethics, & Third-Party Risk

Today, with social media allowing different constituencies to emerge and speak in unison like never before, customers and consumers can hold companies’ feet to the ethical fire with brutal efficiency. Modern third-party risk management goes beyond business practices; the things your third parties say, believe, and support are reflected upon your brand.

Redefining Sexual Harassment in the Age of #MeToo
